Boat races 2006
Alfred Rowing Club took part in three boat races in
the latter part of 2006. These were:
- The Western Cape Universities Boat Race on 12th
August 2006
- The WCR Heads Regatta on 21st October 2006
- The Bishops Heads Regatta on 4th November 2006
Western Cape Universities Boat Race
The Universities kindly invited the other clubs to
join their racing day. Alfreds entered 2 Senior Mens VIIIs with
corresponding crews being entered by Elgin Rowing Club. In this race
the Alfreds 1st VIII beat their Elgin rivals, with Elgin winning the
one-on-one competition between the 2nd VIIIs. Race distance 6.2 km.
Thanks to the Universities for an enjoyable day.
WCR Heads Regatta
Alfreds entered a crew against a crew comprising a
number of the Western Cape coaches. This was an eventful race which
the coaches won easily. The race distance was shortened to 4km by
mutual consent of the two crews. The race was stopped and re-started
after about 900m, due to a clash with crews coming up the river for the
next race. Generally a good time was had by all, as evidenced by one
broken blade and a few bruises...
Pictures from the day available
here.
Thanks to WCR for their organisation.
Bishops Heads Regatta
Alfreds entered a single VIII in a one-on-one race
with Elgin. The racing distance was 6.2km. Alfreds won - for
many in this crew this was their first racing medal, which vicissitude was
a source of great pleasure to crew.
Rowing conditions were tough during the last 3km as
head-winds and rough water made life difficult for both crews. For
the less-fit among us it was a miracle that we finished without need for
oxygen or defibrillators...
Thanks to Bishops for arranging the day and the
various victuals that were on offer. Thanks also to Emma Heany of
Springfield for agreeing to cox us.
