Learn to row
Next course:
We intend
running the next course in August or September 2007 once the water-level
in the vlei has been restored.
The "Learn to
row" course runs
for six weeks on Saturday or Sunday mornings. This is an ideal opportunity
for you to learn about rowing
in an enjoyable environment. You do not have to be super fit or
athletic just enthusiastic and prepared to work hard and have lots of
fun.
Course Details:
- Rowing options sculling/sweep oar and
what these terms entail.
- Ergo for basic technique and
land-training options.
- Basic boat knowledge boat types,
equipment, technical terms.
- Boat drill.
- Rules of the water.
- Practical rowing techniques.
- Mini regatta.
Session
1:
- Objectives.
- Intro to rowing and ZVYC/ARC.
- Benefits of rowing.
- Course details.
- Rowing video.
- Tour of the boat shed, boat types.
- Clubhouse and facilities and
introduction to members.
- Tea.
Session 2:
- Ergo technique 10 mins each.
- Rowing technique at jetty
- How to get in and out of a boat.
- Technical terms.
- Rowing land training and flexibility
Session 3:
- Sweep oar training in the Colonel or
Spirit.
- Boat drill carrying the boat to the
water, entering and exiting the boat technical terms.
- Demonstration of the rowing stroke.
- Tank style rowing at the jetty.
- Rowing in pairs, building up to a full
crew.
Session 4:
- Consolidation of session 3.
Session 5:
- Refining of technique.
- Steady state rowing in pairs, 4s etc.
Session 6:
- Mini regatta -
two boats per race in 4+. Each crew to include 2 competent
oarspeople.
- Wind up and summary of the course.
- Signing of membership application
forms.
Fees
Cost of course: R600
- R300 is
payable on registration, non-refundable.
- The balance
is payable on day 1 that the course starts.
If you sign up
for membership then R300 will be credited to
your subs (see

payable - rowers would pay the entrance fee, the annual subscription and
the RowSA levy).
